CDL endorsements are additional certifications that allow you to haul specialized freight. They're the fastest way to increase your pay without changing jobs. Here's what each one does and how much extra money you can expect.

Available Endorsements

H — Hazmat

What it covers: Transporting hazardous materials (chemicals, fuel, explosives, radioactive materials)

Requirements:

  • Written knowledge test at the DMV
  • TSA background check and fingerprinting ($86.50)
  • Background check takes 4-6 weeks to process
  • Must be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident

Pay boost: $5,000 - $15,000/year ($0.05 - $0.15 per mile premium)

Why get it: Hazmat is the single highest-paying endorsement. Combined with Tanker (X endorsement), it opens the most lucrative freight in trucking.

N — Tanker

What it covers: Driving tank vehicles carrying liquids or gases (fuel, chemicals, milk, water)

Requirements:

  • Written knowledge test only (no background check)
  • Added at the DMV same day

Pay boost: $3,000 - $8,000/year ($0.03 - $0.08 per mile premium)

Why get it: Combined with Hazmat to form the X endorsement, tanker is essential for fuel hauling — one of the steadiest freight markets.

X — Hazmat + Tanker Combined

What it covers: Both hazardous materials AND tank vehicles

Pay boost: $8,000 - $20,000/year (combined premiums)

Why get it: The X endorsement is the gold standard. Fuel tanker drivers are among the highest-paid in the industry with consistent, year-round demand.

T — Doubles/Triples

What it covers: Pulling double or triple trailers

Requirements: Written test only

Pay boost: $2,000 - $5,000/year

Why get it: Essential for LTL (less-than-truckload) carriers like FedEx Freight, XPO, and Old Dominion. These are often local/regional positions with good home time.

P — Passenger

What it covers: Vehicles designed to carry 16+ passengers

Requirements: Written test + skills test with a passenger vehicle

Pay boost: $3,000 - $7,000/year

Why get it: Opens bus driving positions (charter, transit, school). Good for drivers wanting local positions with set schedules.

S — School Bus

What it covers: School buses specifically

Requirements: Written test + skills test + additional state requirements

Pay boost: $2,000 - $5,000/year (seasonal)

Which Endorsements Should You Get?

Minimum recommendation: Get H (Hazmat) and N (Tanker) for the X combination. This opens the highest-paying jobs and costs less than $100 total.

Priority order:

  1. X (Hazmat + Tanker) — Biggest pay increase, most demand
  2. T (Doubles/Triples) — If you want LTL carrier positions
  3. P (Passenger) — If you want bus driving as a backup option

The ROI

Getting your Hazmat endorsement costs $86.50 (TSA fee) plus a few hours studying. If it adds just $5,000/year to your pay, that's a 5,800% return on investment in year one.

There's no reason not to get every endorsement available. Each one widens your job options and increases your earning potential.
